Two advanced approaches to protecting South Florida’s most valuable trees

In Palm Beach and throughout South Florida, a mature landscape is more than curb appeal. Specimen palms, mature oaks, royal poincianas, Ficus, Mango, and other established trees can represent years—or decades—of growth and a significant investment.

For luxury homeowners, property managers, landscape professionals, and estate managers, protecting these living assets requires more than routine spraying.

Two increasingly valuable tools in a comprehensive Landscape Health Management program are deep-root drenching and tree trunk injection. Both can deliver systemic treatments into a tree. The difference is how they get there—and when each approach makes the most sense.




Deep-Root Drenching: Protection From the Ground Up

Deep-root drenching delivers an appropriate systemic treatment into the tree's root zone, where it can be absorbed by the roots and transported through the tree's vascular system.

Think of it as treating the tree through its natural intake system.

Why it works well for estate landscapes

Deep-root treatment is particularly attractive for preventive and ongoing landscape health programs because it is:

  • Non-invasive — no drilling or injection wounds are created.
  • Cost-effective — it generally requires less specialized equipment and labor.
  • Scalable — multiple trees can be treated efficiently during the same service visit.
  • Well suited to preventive programs — particularly when trees are healthy and root-zone conditions are favorable.
  • Appropriate for recurring maintenance — making it a practical component of an annual landscape health strategy.

For a large estate containing dozens or even hundreds of trees and ornamental plants, this efficiency can be significant.

Instead of waiting until a tree shows obvious decline, a landscape health professional can incorporate systemic treatments into a proactive monitoring and maintenance program.

The considerations

Because the treatment must first be absorbed by the roots, performance can depend on soil moisture, root health, soil conditions, irrigation, and the tree's ability to actively transport water.

South Florida presents some additional challenges. Sandy soils, heavy irrigation, high water tables, compacted areas, and proximity to sensitive environmental areas can influence whether a soil application is the best choice.

The treatment must also be selected and applied according to the product label and site conditions.




Tree Injection: Direct-to-Tree Protection

Tree injection takes a different approach.

Rather than placing the treatment into the soil and relying on root uptake, an appropriately labeled systemic treatment is introduced directly into the tree's vascular system.

In simple terms:

Deep-root drenching works from the bottom up. Tree injection delivers the treatment directly into the tree's vascular system.

This can make injection particularly valuable when a tree requires highly targeted treatment or when soil conditions make root uptake less predictable.

When injection can make sense

Tree injection may be particularly appropriate for:

  • High-value specimen trees
  • Significant or mature landscape specimens
  • Trees experiencing active pest pressure
  • Situations requiring targeted systemic delivery
  • Sites where soil treatment is impractical
  • Landscapes where minimizing environmental exposure is particularly important
  • Trees surrounded by hardscape or otherwise having restricted root zones

For a mature specimen tree that contributes significantly to an estate's character and value, the cost of a specialized treatment may be insignificant compared with the cost—and years—required to replace it.




Plug vs. Plugless Injection: Why the Difference Matters

Not all tree-injection systems work the same way.

Depending on the tree species, disease or pest, treatment objective and product label, professionals may use either plug-based or plugless injection systems.

Plug-based injection

With a plug-based system, small access points are drilled into the trunk and fitted with injection ports or plugs. The treatment is then introduced directly into the tree.

For certain woody broadleaf trees, this can be an appropriate technique when a systemic treatment needs to be delivered directly into the vascular system and the benefits of direct delivery outweigh the potential impact of creating an injection wound.

However, drilling into a living tree should never be considered routine simply because an injection system is available.

Every injection creates a wound.

Repeated injections, poor placement, improper technique, or unnecessary drilling can create additional injury to a valuable specimen. Injection should therefore be justified by the specific pest or disease, the tree species, the treatment objective, and the applicable product label.

Plugless injection

Plugless systems are designed to introduce treatment into the tree without leaving permanent injection plugs in the trunk.

Depending on the system and application, this can reduce the physical hardware left behind and may be preferable when direct injection is warranted but a plug-based system is not appropriate.

The important principle is:

The goal is not to inject a tree simply because we can. The goal is to deliver the appropriate treatment while causing the least unnecessary injury.




Why Palm Trees Are Different

This distinction becomes particularly important when dealing with palms.

A palm is not simply a tree with a different-looking trunk. Its anatomy and growth pattern are fundamentally different from those of woody broadleaf trees.

Most woody broadleaf trees can respond to injury through a process known as compartmentalization, in which the tree limits the spread of damage and isolates injured or infected tissue. Over time, new growth can also contribute to covering or enclosing old wounds.

Palms do not heal wounds in this same way.

Because palms do not produce secondary woody growth like typical broadleaf trees, they cannot simply grow new wood around a drilled injection hole and gradually close it.

This means that a hole drilled into a palm can remain as a permanent point of injury.

For that reason, traditional plug-based trunk injection is generally not the preferred approach for palms unless a treatment method has been specifically designed, labeled, and professionally justified for that particular palm and condition.

This is an important distinction because a treatment method that makes sense for a mature oak, Ficus, or other woody broadleaf specimen may not make sense for a palm.

When systemic treatment is appropriate for a palm, the application method should be selected specifically for the palm's biology and the disease or pest being addressed. Depending on the circumstances, this may include an appropriately labeled soil or root-zone treatment or a specialized injection technique designed for palms.

For valuable specimen palms, avoiding unnecessary wounds is particularly important. The objective should always be effective treatment with the least unnecessary injury to the plant.




The Important Trade-Off

Injection is not simply a superior version of root treatment.

It is more invasive.

The process creates injection wounds in the tree, and improper technique or excessive repeated injections can cause unnecessary injury. For that reason, injection should be performed by trained professionals using products and application methods specifically permitted by the applicable label.

When a non-invasive treatment can accomplish the same objective effectively, there may be little reason to create an injection wound.

There is no universal winner.

The appropriate approach depends on the tree, pest or disease, treatment objective, soil conditions, tree health, and value of the specimen.

The objective is not to apply more products. It is to apply the right treatment, in the right place, at the right time, for the right reason.

For some trees, that means a deep-root systemic treatment. For others—particularly high-value specimens requiring highly targeted intervention—trunk injection may be the better tool.

And sometimes, the best treatment is no treatment at all—just careful monitoring and good cultural and irrigation practices.
