Ganoderma: The Silent Threat Hiding in South Florida Trees
Why Palm Beach County homeowners shouldn't ignore those strange shelf-like fungi growing on their palms, ficus and other trees
Palm trees are part of the architecture of South Florida. They frame driveways, surround swimming pools, create privacy screens and give Palm Beach County properties the tropical character that makes them so desirable.
But there is a much broader fungal threat that homeowners should know about: Ganoderma.
When most people hear the name, they think of Ganoderma butt rot of palms, a lethal disease caused by Ganoderma zonatum. But Ganoderma is actually a genus of wood-decaying fungi, with different species affecting different types of trees.
In Florida, G. zonatum is specifically associated with palms. Other Ganoderma species are commonly found on hardwood trees, including oaks and other woody species. That distinction matters.
Because a strange shelf-like fungus growing from the base of a tree shouldn't simply be dismissed as "just a mushroom."
A Ganoderma conk can be a visible warning sign of significant wood decay occurring inside a tree.
What Exactly Is Ganoderma?
Ganoderma is a genus of wood-decaying fungi found throughout the world.
Different species have different preferred hosts. Ganoderma zonatum, for example, is the fungus responsible for Ganoderma butt rot of palms and is considered a palm specialist. The University of Florida / Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) reports that at least 65 palm species have been documented with this disease.
Other Ganoderma species occur on hardwood trees. UF/IFAS identifies species such as G. curtisii and G. sessile among the Ganoderma associated with hardwood decay in the southeastern United States. Some species are specialists, while others can occur on a broader range of tree species.
This is why the tree species matters when evaluating a suspected Ganoderma infection.
And it is also why homeowners should not attempt to determine the exact species simply by comparing a photograph to something found online.
What Does Ganoderma Look Like?
One of the most recognizable signs is a conk—the reproductive structure produced by the fungus.
On palms, G. zonatum produces a hard, shelf-like structure attached to the lower trunk. Mature conks typically develop a reddish-brown upper surface and a white underside.
On hardwood trees, Ganoderma fruiting bodies can look somewhat different and can vary considerably in shape, color and attachment.
They may appear:
- At the base of the trunk
- Around the root flare
- Directly on the trunk
- On exposed roots
- On dead stumps or buried wood
UF/IFAS notes that identifying the exact Ganoderma species from appearance alone can be difficult because the fruiting bodies are highly variable.
And sometimes the first sign is surprisingly small.
Early fungal growth may appear as a relatively inconspicuous white growth or button before developing into the familiar shelf-like structure.

Ganoderma Doesn't Always Look Like a Palm Problem
The photographs accompanying this article were taken here in South Florida and show Ganoderma-type fruiting bodies developing on ficus trees. They illustrate an important point: Ganoderma is not exclusively a palm issue.
While G. zonatum itself is a palm pathogen and does not cause disease in other plant families, other Ganoderma species can cause wood decay in hardwood trees.

This distinction is particularly important for homeowners with mature ficus, oak and other valuable specimen trees.
Why Should Homeowners Be Concerned?
Because these fungi don't simply live on the surface. Ganoderma species are wood-decay fungi. They break down components of woody tissue, and some can cause significant internal decay before the extent of the problem is obvious from the outside. UF/IFAS specifically notes that knowing the Ganoderma species and host tree can assist with structural evaluations and hazardous-tree risk assessments.
For palms, the concern is particularly serious. Ganoderma zonatum progressively degrades the lower portion of the palm trunk. By the time a conk appears on a living palm, significant decay may already have occurred.
That means the conk isn't merely an ugly mushroom: it can be a warning that something much more serious is happening inside the tree.
Can Ganoderma Be Treated?
This is where homeowners need to be particularly careful. For Ganoderma butt rot of palms caused by G. zonatum, there is currently no cultural or chemical treatment that cures an infected palm.
- Fertilizer cannot cure it.
- A fungicide cannot restore the infected palm.
- Removing the visible conk does not cure the tree.
Once the disease is confirmed, the objective becomes protecting people, surrounding vegetation and the landscape—not attempting to save an infected palm that cannot be cured.
For Ganoderma affecting hardwood trees, the situation is different because different species and host trees are involved. A conk should therefore trigger professional evaluation rather than an automatic assumption about the diagnosis or treatment.
Once Ganoderma Is Confirmed, Don't Wait
Once Ganoderma has been confirmed, removal should not be postponed unnecessarily, particularly when an infected palm is involved.
For G. zonatum, UF/IFAS recommends removing a palm as soon as conks appear. A conk on a living palm indicates substantial trunk decay and can create a serious structural hazard, particularly during strong winds and hurricanes.
There is another concern: spores.
Ganoderma reproduces through spores produced by its fruiting bodies. In the case of G. zonatum, UF/IFAS notes that these spores can be moved by wind and water and that monitoring should extend beyond the affected property.
Prompt removal therefore isn't simply about making one landscape look better, it is about responsible landscape management.
Leaving an infected palm standing gives the fungus more opportunity to produce additional conks and spores while the tree continues to deteriorate. Removing the infected material promptly can help reduce the potential for further contamination and, just as importantly, eliminate a potentially hazardous tree before it becomes a danger to people, structures or neighboring property.
What Happens After the Tree Is Removed?
Removing the visible tree is only part of the process.
With G. zonatum, the fungus can survive in soil and colonize remaining palm material, including stumps. UF/IFAS has documented replacement palms becoming diseased when planted in locations previously occupied by palms affected by Ganoderma.
For that reason, simply removing a diseased palm and immediately planting another palm in the same hole is not recommended.
UF/IFAS advises removing as much of the stump and root system as practical or grinding the stump. The organization also notes that the fungus may persist in soil for multiple years, and the precise period of viability is not known.

What Should You Plant Instead?
For a site where G. zonatum has killed a palm, another palm is generally not the first choice. UF/IFAS recommends replacing the affected palm with a non-palm plant because G. zonatum is specifically a palm pathogen and the fungus can remain in the soil. Oaks, pines and woody shrubs are not affected by G. zonatum.
That doesn't mean the landscape has to lose its tropical character.
A landscape professional can select an appropriate replacement based on:
- Sun exposure
- Drainage
- Available growing space
- Root-zone conditions
- Desired height and form
- Maintenance requirements
- Overall landscape design
The goal isn't simply to fill the hole it's to make a smart long-term planting decision.
The Best Defense Is Inspection
There is no magic spray that guarantees a palm or tree will never encounter a wood-decay fungus.
There is, however, something homeowners can do: Look.
Regular landscape inspections can identify unusual fungal growth, declining trees, structural concerns and other problems before they become much larger—and more expensive—issues.
For properties with palms, UF/IFAS recommends monitoring approximately every six months when there is no history of Ganoderma butt rot. After Ganoderma has been observed, monitoring should increase substantially; UF/IFAS recommends monthly monitoring of palms and the surrounding area.
And don't inspect only the palms. Look at the ficus. Look at the oaks. Look at mature specimen trees. Look around the root flare and lower trunk.
A strange shelf, white growth, unusual decay or unexplained decline deserves attention.
Protect Your Landscape—and Your Neighbors'
A luxury landscape represents a substantial investment. Mature specimen trees and palms can take decades to develop and can be extremely expensive to replace.
Ganoderma is not something to panic about—but it is something to take seriously.
Different Ganoderma species affect different hosts, and a photograph alone cannot always tell you which species is present or how much internal decay has occurred.
